Big Second Half Helps Marquette Roll on Senior Night

On an evening when a record 11 Mustang players and two student assistants were honored on Senior Night (including Danny Adams, Keith Winchell, Taylor Lehman, Matt Cox, Chris Rosehill, D'Angelo Wood, Chad Haley, Eric Phillips, Will Jones, Ky McKeon, Andy Rosburg, Eric Maassen and Adrien Grossheim), MHS made a six-minute stretch of the third quarter their statement of the evening in holding off a feisty Fox squad 69-41 to wrap up the 2007-2008 regular season with a 16-8 mark and a 6-2 Suburban West Conference mark (the program’s best since the league expanded to nine teams).

Marquette
started the night on a hot streak.  Andy Rosburg hit fellow senior Chad Haley cutting to the bucket to give his team an early 2-0 advantage.  Moments later, Rosburg converted a traditional three-point play off an offensive rebound (one of his 12 on the night).  Another Rosburg bucket helped to stretch the lead to 7-2.  After a Haley putback of his own miss, Adrien Grossheim converted a couple of charity tosses and the lead had stretched to 13-4.  After a Fox mini-run to cut the lead to 13-9, Haley and Rosburg again answered with Chad hitting his first of five treys and Rosburg again nailing a lane jumper to give the home squad an 18-11 lead after a quarter.

Two Ky McKeon free throws to go along with a long trey by Ky off great team ball movement were quickly followed by a lay-in off a nice feed from Matt Cox to Eric Phillips (both back after dealing with sickness earlier in the week).    When D’Angelo Wood (making his first appearance after exactly three weeks recovering from a sprained ankle) was able to go coast-to-coast to hit a dipsy-doo layup the Mustang were in total control of the contest leading it 27-14.  The turnover bug which had held off in deference to the Senior Night festivities then decided to make an appearance.  The Mustangs ended the half with four turnovers (including three in a row during one particularly bad stretch) over their final seven possessions to go along with 0/3 shooting.  Two Chad Haley free throws in the final minute of the second period were the only chinks in the Warriors’ armor as the visitors went on an 11-2 run to end the half and trail it by only a 29-25 tally.

Taking care of the ball became the Mustangs’ mantra to start play in the second half.  The first turnover of the half didn’t befall the home team until its 10th go at the bucket. In those ten possessions, the Mustangs hit on their first three tries from behind the arc (Chris Rosehill, Haley and McKeon in that order).  Rosburg converted a putback off an offensive board.  After Haley’s third free throw conversion in the quarter, the hosts had gone on a 14-0 run to push the lead out to 43-25 before Fox could score their first bucket of the half with just over
2:00 to go in the quarter.  After a McKeon off-handed lay-in off a slick pass from Haley and a final Rosburg bucket the damage had been done with the Mustangs leading 47-31 heading to the fourth.

Haley led off the fourth with his final three-pointer of the night.  With all of
Chad’s prowess from the field on the night, his most notable play probably occurred just moments into the final stanza.  With a loose ball headed from the Fox end toward the Mustang bench, Chad outran a Warrior to grab the basketball and with his back toward the court caught Chris Rosehill racing down the floor with a spinning pass that hit Chris in stride for a lay-in that brought the sizable Mustang contingent to its feet (the bucket finished off a solid evening for the senior guard as he scored eight and handed off a team-best five assists).  Solid basketball the remainder of the way that saw MHS only turn the ball over twice in the fourth was the name of the game.  Along the stretch were a long baseline three from Matt Cox off a great ball-swing by his teammates and a tremendous finish at the bucket in transition by Eric Maassen from Wood who led the break.

With the win, the Mustangs enter post-season play on a positive note.  The Missouri Class 5 District #5 Tournament opens play on Monday, February 18 at
CBC.  Marquette will take on Parkway West in their second meeting of the season and a re-match of last year’s district game won in the final moments by the Longhorns at 5:00.
