Mustangs Take Out Parkway Central on Faculty Night
Tonight’s contest at the Marquette Athletic Complex was looked at by some as a tune-up for Friday night’s much-anticipated contest to open conference play versus Lafayette. However, knowing the quick-tempo that their guests liked to play, Marquette wanted to make sure business got taken care of in this match-up against Parkway Central. Business accomplished as the Mustangs took the Colts in a 61-40 final on a night when some of Marquette High School’s Finest were honored.
Senior guard Chris Rosehill was the early story for the home team. Chris followed two early misses inside the paint with two three-pointers. With Andy Rosburg quickly staking his claim to the interior, the Mustangs raced to an early 10-2 lead. After a Colt bucket to cut the lead to six, senior Eric Maassen streaked down the left wing where Chad Haley was able to hit him in stride for a nice reverse lay-up in traffic. Haley followed his assist with a jumper of his own (Chad finished the night with a season-high 17) and the quarter ended with the Mustangs up 16-7. Rosburg grabbed his own missed shot to start the second and converted the put-back to put his team up 11. The transition game then kicked in for MHS as Eric Phillips pulled up from 14 feet out for a quick bank shot and was followed by a nice cut by Ky McKeon off a feed from Will Jones and finally another Haley jumper all in the span of less than a minute. The Marquette lead at that point had reached 19. The rest of the half was a sputtering effort though as in the final eight possessions the Mustangs coughed the ball up five times and only shot 2/7. Haley accounted for both of those makes with a jumper mid-way through the arid stretch and a pull-up from 12 feet out to beat the buzzer and put his team up 28-15 at intermission. Marquette’s mantra for the third quarter offensively was consistency. The home team alternated possessions for scoring clear through until three minutes remained in the period. Rosehill scored off a quick feed from Rosburg. Eric Phillips hit a turnaround off the block and Rosburg made the move of the night in the paint going up and under for an easy two. Ky McKeon connected on his first three of the season with just under a minute-and-a-half to go before Rosburg grabbed consecutive offensive rebounds and hit on the last attempt just before the buzzer (Andy would end with what he does best…the double-double with 18 points and 16 boards) to give the Mustangs a 43-27 cushion. Marquette hit on four of its first seven attempts of the final frame including a slick baseline move and jumper by forward Will Jones. Careless ballhandling by MHS and continued pushing of the tempo by the Colts kept the score from getting out of hand. From the Jones bucket with just over 5:00 to play until D’Angelo Woods scored at the 1:30 mark, the Mustangs attempted nary a shot from the field, instead relying on their prowess from the free throw line. The final minutes saw Marquette convert on 7/9 from the charity stripe including the first two varsity points from junior Jake Dobkins in the closing minute. The Mustangs return to the court this Friday, December 14 for the Suburban West Conference opener with Lafayette. The 1100+ seat Marquette Athletic Complex sold out this afternoon in pre-game ticket sales and a raucous crowd is expected for the 7pm tip-off.
