Total Team Effort Pays Off in Road Win at Kirkwood
Even with Wednesday night’s win at Parkway North fresh on their minds, Marquette knew going into tonight’s Suburban West contest with Kirkwood that nothing short of a superb performance would be enough against a red-hot Pioneer squad (which had won four in a row to win the 5th place trophy at the Meramec Tournament after starting the season 2-5). Consider performance accomplished as the Mustangs played superior basketball on both ends of the floor in a 58-43 road victory.
In the aforementioned game at Parkway North, Marquette started slowly before coming on to establish themselves in the latter part of the opening quarter. This game was just the opposite. Senior guard Chris Rosehill opened things up by pouring in a couple of long three-pointers in the first three trips down the floor. Even on the possession where they didn’t score the Mustangs got three looks at the basket after a couple of offensive boards. Andy Rosburg found the basket on his third try from the field and the Mustangs found themselves up 6-2. Unfortunately, the turnover bug bit again and MHS ended the quarter with a total of six ballhandling miscues. In turning though to the positives, Marquette took three charges from the Pioneers (two by Chad Haley and one by Taylor Lehman). Heading to their huddle after 8:00, the team considered itself fortunate to be only trailing 10-8. Haley opened up the second quarter with a driving lay-in to tie the score. While the team wasn’t shooting well, one could look to the offensive carom and turnover column to see things were looking up. Marquette turned the ball over only twice in the period to go along with five offensive boards in a five possession stretch. Will Jones laid in his own offensive board and was followed up by a possession where both he and Ky McKeon grabbed loose balls in heavy traffic against the athletic Pioneers to eventually see Ky drop the ball in the hoop (That play in and of itself personifed the game for Marquette. With several starters on the verge of serious foul trouble throughout, players like Jones, McKeon, Taylor Lehman, Matt Cox and Garrett Sneed were all instrumental in keeping the momentum flowing for the visitors.). A 3/3 performance after being fouled beyond the arc by Taylor Lehman gave his team the lead and by the time the half ended with Rosburg hitting on a free throw and Haley nailing another field goal the Mustangs led it 21-17 in what was looking to be a typical SWC nail-biter. The third quarter was one of near offensive perfection for the Mustangs. Beginning with four Rosburg buckets to begin the quarter followed up by a Lehman trey, the men in Navy and Kelly scorched the nets in the period. By the time Chad Haley had driven the lane again to score against the Pioneer interior defense, the Mustangs found themselves up 43-30 after a phenomenal 9/12 shooting performance for the span. In the fourth, the Mustangs saw Kirkwood cut the lead to below double-digits just once before answering and stretching the lead back out. A three-pointer by D’Angelo Wood got things going for Marquette. Haley drove the lane on consecutive trips to score before Wood ended the scoring with a nifty drive and finish on the press sandwiched around an easy Eric Phillips lay-in to break the press. In beating the Pioneers for the second time this season, Marquette moves into the W column for the conference season at 1-1. The Mustangs will stay on the road Monday, January 7 as they travel to Washington to take on the host Blue Jays in the 37th edition of the Blue Jay Invitational. Leading Scorers: Chad Haley-14, Andy Rosburg-14, Chris Rosehill-8. Leading Assists: Wood-3, 4 tied with 2. Leading Rebounders: Rosburg-7, 3 tied with 3. HARD HAT AWARD WINNER: Chad Haley.
