Turnovers Ruin Solid Start

In a game they were not favored in (Hazelwood Central came into this afternoon’s game at a perfect 7-0 on the young season), the Mustangs made a statement early that they belonged in the proceedings.  However, not being able to finish the job made the early dominant effort for naught in a 53-46 loss.

An early errant pass and traveling violation didn’t bode well for
Marquette on its first two possessions.  With chances to go up and seize control of the game though, the Hawks failed in their endeavor as well.  Central grabbed five offensive boards in their first four possessions but couldn’t find the bucket.  After the initial hiccups, MHS played their finest seven minutes of the season to date.  After a three by D’Angelo Wood, the Mustangs ended the quarter by scoring on eight of their final nine possessions (all while shooting 8/10 from the floor).  After another Wood trey and two Phillips buckets, the Meramec crowd sat in surprise looking at a scoreboard that read 18-3 in the Mustangs’ favor.

After a couple of misses and a turnover to start the second, the Mustangs settled back in.  A tough lean-in jumper by Wood dropped and Chad Haley followed up with a determined take to the bucket and a traditional three-point play.  While the Hawks were getting back into their normal offensive mode, the Mustangs were holding their own.  Five turnovers though in the second period were a sign of things to come.  Leading 28-15, Central converted on a running 28-footer at the buzzer and the two teams left the floor with
Marquette still up by ten.

After a slick drive and dish from Haley to Andy Rosburg to start the quarter and put their team up 12, Andy followed a Hawk bucket with an offensive board and deuce to keep his team up by a dozen.  It was at that point that the bottom fell out of the Mustangs’ chances on this night.  In the next 11 trips down the floor, the efficient MHS offense went anemic.  Seven of those possessions ended in turnovers…turnovers which were more often than not unforced.  Bad passes, not catching the ball and simply losing it out of grip all began to weave a sad ending to the game.  By the time Eric Phillips had hit on a jumper and Chad Haley again finished a three-point play to end the quarter, what had once been a 15-point advantage was now a tie game at 38 heading into the fourth.

Five more turnovers punctuated the Mustangs’ chances to win the game.  While they weren’t getting field goal tries (0/4 in the opening six minutes of the fourth quarter), the team was getting to the foul line.  Unfortunately, 5/9 in a close ballgame wasn’t going to do the trick.  2/7 shooting in the final minutes put the final nail in the coffin and what had been a sizable lead for
Marquette and a great chance at a ticket to the winners bracket at Meramec had ended in a disappointing 22-point turnaround and a Hazelwood Central win.
